Noticing that, in many of my participatory pieces, there's always someone who drops his/her pants and shows us his/her ass, I decided to develop a piece which caters specifically to this tendency. I had simultaneously began thinking about "spectacles", about the need for spectacles, and the hunger for spectacles. I also began thinking about promoting "stupidity", or stupid behavior. Thus, the A.S.S. (Academy of Stupidity and Spectacle) came together, as, perhaps, a raunchier cousin of VAINGLORIOUS. The setup - a simple photo booth with suitably lurid lighting, a rigorous numbering scheme (more of my data gathering), and a video projector to cast the images, 15' high, on the window of the gallery. Towards the end of the night I noticed a police car circling, circling, circling...
